Childhood vaccinations: what parents need to know

Vaccinations help protect children from serious illnesses and give them the best start in life. In Scotland, children are offered a range of routine vaccines from birth through to school age to keep them safe as they grow.

Why childhood vaccines are important

Vaccines protect your child against infections that can cause serious harm, including long-term health problems. When more children are vaccinated, it also helps protect others in the community who may be more vulnerable.

Vaccinations used in Scotland are carefully tested and monitored to make sure they are safe and effective.

When children are offered vaccines

Children are invited for vaccinations at different stages, starting shortly after birth and continuing through early childhood. These vaccines are usually given at your GP surgery or local health clinic.

You’ll receive information and appointment details when your child is due for their vaccinations.

If you’ve missed a vaccination

If your child has missed one or more vaccines, it’s not too late to catch up. Getting in touch as soon as possible means your child can still get the protection they need.

Contact the surgery to arrange an appointment.
