Cold weather and winter illnesses can affect us all. Flu, COVID-19 and other infections can make some people seriously unwell.
There are simple steps you can take to protect yourself, look after your family and get the right NHS care when you need it.
Get your winter vaccinations
Vaccines can help protect you from becoming seriously ill.
NHS Scotland offers winter flu and COVID-19 vaccines to eligible people.
You may be offered a vaccine if you are older, have certain health conditions or are in another eligible group.
Some people will be offered both vaccines, while others may only be offered the flu vaccine.
If you are eligible, you may receive a letter, text or email with information about your appointment or how to book.

Through NHS Pharmacy First Scotland, your local community pharmacy can offer advice and treatment for many minor illnesses.
These may include:
- Coughs and colds.
- Sore throats.
- Earache.
- Minor skin problems.
- Other common health concerns.
You do not usually need an appointment.
Your pharmacist can also tell you if you need to see another healthcare professional.

Protect others from winter bugs
Coughs, colds and other viruses spread more easily in winter.
You can help reduce the spread by:
- Washing your hands with soap and water.
- Using tissues when you cough or sneeze.
- Putting used tissues in the bin.
- Staying at home if you have a high temperature or feel too unwell for normal activities.
- Opening windows for fresh air when it is safe to do so.
Remember your repeat prescriptions
GP practices and pharmacies may have different opening times over Christmas and New Year.
If you take regular medicine:
- Check your supply before the holidays.
- Request repeat prescriptions in good time.
- Allow time for your pharmacy to prepare your medicines.
- Only order what you need.
Contact your GP practice or pharmacy to find out how to request repeat prescriptions.
